Sibechat3Second calendar year (?) male Siberian Stonechat, east side of Kalloni Saltpans, 26 April 2014 © Steve Dudley

Present and showing well all morning since it was found by Mike Hodgson and Reg Thorpe early morning. Park at hide in NE corner and walk down track for five minutes to field entrance track with grey wire mesh ‘gate’ and white rubbish in ditch to right of entrance. Look towards the olive grove at the back of this field and the bird is on the back fence line and dead trees. Please keep to the track – no need to enter the field.

NOTICES

River levels are now back at pre-storm levels and other wet areas fast losing water and few birds using them anyway.

Meladia Valley track The Sigri to Eresos track now drivable in a normal car from Eroesos to the ford and chapel (do not attempt to go further without a 4×4). From the Sigri end it is also drivable in a normal car as far as the old sanatorium (but do not attempt to go further without a 4×4).

Nest site located at last. Park by the white building as normal. Walk through forest along the track. c.50m before the track forms right over the dry stream, look for a sheep skull on the right of the path. From here look 45 degrees across the dry stream to the left and look for a large tree with an obvious great, no bark, dead upper half with lots of dead branches and a lower half with bark. Two holes in top of bark section.
+++ Apparently the skull has been moved (maliciously?). So look from c.50m before the fork that crosses the dry stream bed. Bird still visiting nest today.

Part of 22 seen arriving in the area this evening

NOTICES

Water levels are fast reducing following last weeks storm. Rivers are back to pre-storm levels but still lots of standing water around but not producing much as they are devoid of food for herons, waders, etc.

Meladia Valley track The Sigri to Eresos track is now not drivable in anything other than a 4×4. You can drive as far as the ford from Eresos, but cannot cross the ford by car or on foot for the time being. It will be passable on foot later in the week when the water drops. The track between the ford and Sigri is now heavily storm damaged and I strongly advise you do not attempt to drive this section in a normal car. 21 Apr – some have tried to drive it in non-4x4s and report that the track has not improved and should still not be attempted.
