The olive grove area between Skala Vasilikon and Alikoudi Pool is again very good this year, especially the groves around the Greek road sign for ‘Lisvori and Skala Polichnitou’. Walk along the road and tracks in this area.

Also, the groves around the Potamia river bridge (north of the track to the reservoir, not the ‘main’ road bridge), either side of the bridge and north and south of the bridge.

As ever, Masked Shrikes are very active in these areas and their song is often confused for OTW. Look for OTWs flying low between trees and ‘gliding’ up to into trees.

Achladeri Krüper’s Nuthatch
The pair are now feeding young and the female is still brooding them regularly. Please only view from the track – please do not cross the stream and approach the nest site.
Nest site info Park by the white building as normal. Walk through the forest along the track. c.50m before the track forks right over the dry stream, look 45 degrees across the dry stream to the right and look for a large tree with an obvious great, no bark, dead upper half with lots of dead branches and a lower half with bark. Two holes in top of bark section.

My last day on the island for this spring, and my four weeks here ends with a mega, Pallas’s Warbler, the first record for the island (and hot the heels of the other first record, the Siberian Stonechat of course).

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to the daily updates, many of whom have been credited with the more notable observations. Particular thanks to Paul Manning, Jason Coppock, Howard Vaughan and Christian Haass.

My thanks also to the Hotel Pasiphae, Tsalis car rentals and the tavernas Dionysos (Skala Kallonis), Australia (Sigri), Mistral (Molivos) and Soulatso (Skala Eresou).

BIRD NEWS

PALLAS’S WARBLER
The first record for Lesvos (and only the second for Greece) was a bird found by Jason Coppock at the Maladia Valley chapel. The bird was frequenting the large hedge-like bush on the seaward side of the chapel and rarely venturing in to the chapel trees.

BIRD NEWS

Olive-tree Warbler sites

Nest site info Park by the white building as normal. Walk through the forest along the track. c.50m before the track forks right over the dry stream, look 45 degrees across the dry stream to the right and look for a large tree with an obvious great, no bark, dead upper half with lots of dead branches and a lower half with bark. Two holes in top of bark section. Female is now sitting and my initial estimate is that they will be feeding young from around the weekend of 11/12 May.
