NOTICES

Bad behaviour
We’ve had a series of incidents in recent days – people entering the river at the Penduline Tits, sitting under the Kruper’s Nuthatch tree, entering a cropped field which caused the farmer to chase the pratincoles away, and blocking tracks stopping locals from going about their business. All these actions are unacceptable. We need to self police all sites at all times, be these nesting birds we are visiting, tired migrants resting in fields or whatever. And we also need to respect local people and their land and not trespass and trample their crops. On most occasions polite requests have resolved the situation.

Lost & Found
A large, wide brimmed blue M&S sun hat found at Kalloni Saltpans last night. Also, lens cap for a Leica Televid 62 scope (don’t know where found and been here some days). Both at reception at Hotel Pasiphae

Dirt tracks
Take care on all dirt roads. Most hire car insurance does not cover the underside of the car. Pay particular care on the following roads (I have no news about the north coast track, Konditsia Valley or Platania but will post when I do).

Dirt tracks are now being graded (e.g. main Metochi track and Meladia track from Eresos) – take care on newly graded tracks as there will be lots of loose stones and rocks which can kick up and damage the underside of your car.

Meladia Valley track From Eresos, OK in normal car WITH CARE as far as Meladia Chapel. From Sigri, OK as far as Old Sanatorium WITH CARE, but 4×4 required to get through to Meladia Valley. The track is currently being graded from the Eresos end and by today had not been completed.

Mt Ordimnos and North Coast tracks 4×4 recommended, track in poor condition in places.

Sadly, I had the site marked but today some selfish person removed the markers just to make it harder for others to find. So, park before the white building as normal. Walk up the main track. Where the track bends to the left at the stream follow around to the left and up the hill. Around 30m before the clearing, walk into the trees to the left for about 30m then view to your right to look for the nest tree. Please see here for photo of tree to look for. Stay within the trees at a distance of 50m+ please. The birds are actively feeding young and visiting the nest every view minutes at peak feeding times.

KRUPER’S NUTHATCH, ACHLADERI
Sadly, I had the site marked but today some selfish person removed the markers just to make it harder for others to find. So, park before the white building as normal. Walk up the main track. Where the track bends to the left at the stream follow around to the left and up the hill. Around 30m before the clearing, walk into the trees to the left for about 30m then view to your right to look for the nest tree. Please see here for photo of tree to look for. Stay within the trees at a distance of 50m+ please. The birds are actively feeding young and visiting the nest every view minutes at peak feeding times.

NOTICES

Mt Ordimnos and North Coast tracks 4×4 recommended, track in poor condition in places.
